Digital Health Predictions for 2020

Thoughts on 2020 and the activity in digital health.

Large strategics in the surgical space like Johnson & Johnson, Medtronic and Stryker will continue to acquire digital platforms.

You can expect more from the imaging juggernauts like Siemens Healthineers, Philips and their peers for major investments as well.

JNJ will exercise its arrangement to fully acquire Verb Surgical Inc.*

The Auris Health, Inc acquisition rationalizes it strategically, financially and technically. This creates a tremendous amount of pressure on Medtronic to increase its cadence and technology spend in digital.

CMR Surgical becomes the property of one of the larger strategics. It may be someone who already has a digital surgery platform in development or it may be one of the large imaging diagnostics players.

Intuitive has a critical mass of engineering and IP in the surgical robotics market. It will need to break away from its technical echo-chamber of “it wasn’t invented here” in order to remain a leader and acquire tech.

The emergence of the disposable robot will create a new category of surgical robotics enabling digital surgery to grow beyond the current large-format platforms which require billion-dollar parents to effectively commercialize.

A toast to the Golden Years ahead.
