Hospitals are more likely to pay for technology depth. ASCs will buy it for speed. Both are buying time one clinically, one operationally.
John Babitt and Scott Fraser and I discuss the dynamic differences in the ASC vs. Hospital markets at The MedTech Conference hosted by AdvaMed.
Hospitals don’t buy technology they buy outcomes and efficiency.
Hospitals and their technologies tend to look for clinical force multipliers. Looking for reductions in complications, reoperations, and readmissions. All killers of both margins and reputation.
ASCs equation flip it. Low/mid-complexity cases require high volumes and strong outcomes and margins are thin. Clinical complexity is not the inflection point, speed, predictability, and throughput are.
Technologies that address the mid to low acuity caseloads, predictive setup, instrument readiness, faster turnover will get traction.
Most of these technologies, especially robotics dont have a price problem; they have a payment-model problem.
